Household Basic - Gallery 9

To play on the eco-friendly architecture of this Southern California home, the kitchen focuses on natural textures like walnut cabinets and CaesarStone countertops. Energy-efficient appliances are hidden behind cupboards to maintain the clean, streamlined aesthetic of the rest of the house.

This modern, spacious room serves many purposes, serving as a kitchen, dining, and living room. All-wood materials bring a warm, laid-back vibe to this Rhode Island haven and reflect the homeowners’ eco-savvy style. By limiting the number of walls, hallways, and corridors, the space feels much larger than its relatively small square footage would normally allow.

Ample hooks make storage a breeze, and horizontal-striped area rugs infuse color and pattern into this sleek design. Nautical-inspired, wall-mounted sconces are reminiscent of this home’s coastal location.

This comfy porch swing and daybed turns this South Carolina porch into a soothing retreat. A cool blue-green cushion and throw pillows reflect the coastal style of this home.

Sand-colored cabinetry, marble countertops, and backsplash create an off-white backdrop for bowls, trays, and dishware. Nautical-style lighting above the kitchen island carries the coastal-inspired feel of the rest of the house into the kitchen.

A table and built-in bench create this cheerful breakfast nook. A striped cushion ties the yellow harlequin-pattern painted floors to the green-blue finish of the breakfast table. A subtle pendant light, Roman shades, and an antique-style wall clock complete the vintage look.

Beaded-board cabinet fronts on the bottom and glass-front cabinets above give the option for discreet storage as well as let the colorful dishware bring color into the space. Heart-pine countertops, a farmhouse sink, and pine floors painted a subtle yellow-and-white harlequin pattern give the kitchen an earnest cottage charm.

Walls covered with horizontal reclaimed cypress boards lend a subtle texture to this laid-back living room near Palmetto Beach, South Carolina. The slate surround of the mantel, along with the landscape painting above the mantel, reinforce the gray-blue color scheme.

This traditional porch near Palmetto Beach, South Carolina, employs coastal-style architecture to give this new home old Southern charm with shutters that reach all the way to the ceiling. The folding shutters can be opened to let in light and air or closed for more privacy. The slats can be adjusted to let air circulate.

Though this San Diego kitchen is small, creative use of space makes it functional. Wine, for example, is stored vertically on the wall, and an old ironing board nook becomes a liquor cabinet. By eliminating over-the-counter cabinets, the space seems larger than it really is. A bright red paint energizes the space.

Warm colors and Southwestern-style furnishings make this sitting area a great place to relax. Two round mirrors lend visual interest and symmetry to the space, and the cool yellow paint color complements the tile floor.

Exposed wooden ceiling beams, slatelike granite countertops, and industrial-style stools with butcher-block seats create charm in the English country–style kitchen. The expansive island provides plenty of space to cook and gather.

Risers painted a vibrant ocean hue make over a standard staircase. Custom balusters in a wave pattern add the finishing touch to this beach house staircase.

A blue gingham wallpaper print envelops this entryway. Small nautical knots form the pattern on the stair runner. Light blue floors decked out with sailboats, whale wall art, and a decorative oar finish off this quintessentially coastal foyer.

An old tool shed was cleverly transformed into this cool pool house. A set of French doors were added, and a trundle bed pulls out for poolside naps.

When the homeowner found the perfectly weathered set of dining chairs under a snowdrift, she immediately coated them with lacquer to preserve its natural antiquing. A black spray-painted chandelier points to a store-bought dining table topped with white milk paint and then further distressed. Whitewashed tongue-and-groove wood floors match the color of the walls and ceiling, opening up with space.

This stand-alone tub instantly turns a basic bathroom into a retreat. Yellow vanities make this a wonderfully sunny space even during the winter months.

Open shelving with substantial support brackets frame a soft green kitchen. A darker shade of paint offsets the walls from the shelving units and the molding around the entrance to the space. Small white subway tiles line the marble countertop backsplash, catching the color of the displayed dishes and serving wear.

An antique English buffet table was transformed into a contemporary sink console, giving this bathroom a distinctly modern feel. A ceiling-mount shower fixture and a track curtain turned a simple white slipper tub into a stand-up shower. Used as a guest bathroom, the wall sconces, waffle towels, and silver accents make this room seem like a luxury hotel bathroom.

A balance of modern and traditional is exemplified in this cottage-style kitchen. The original architecture of this 1940s beach cottage was updated, and now a vaulted ceiling and track lighting are the focal points of this modern kitchen. Several different types and shades of wood are used in the dining table, countertops, cabinets, and even the refrigerator doors.

To maintain continuity between the bath and shower walls, the designer lined the shower with pure white CaesarStone, carved to look like planked wood. A straight-lined, free-standing bathtub, vanity area, and square wall sconces echo the modern-meets-coastal-cottage style of the rest of the house.
